Career

Musk attended the University of Pretoria for a short time before relocating to Canada at the age of 18. He became a Canadian citizen thanks to his mother, who was born in that country. He enrolled at Queen’s University in 1990, and two years later he moved to the University of Pennsylvania, where he earned bachelor’s degrees in economics and physics. In 1995, he uprooted his life and headed for California to enroll at Stanford. He left out of school after only two days to start the software startup Zip2 with his brother Kimbal.

In February 1999, Compaq paid $307 million in cash to purchase Zip2; Musk received $22 million for his 7% stake. Musk later co-founded X.com in 1999, which provides electronic payment services and online banking. Over 200,000 customers signed up in X.com’s first few months of existence, making it one of the first online banks to be insured by the federal government. Despite Musk’s role as the company’s founder, Intuit CEO Bill Harris replaced him by year’s end due to investors’ perception of his lack of experience.

In 2002, eBay paid $1.5 billion in stock to purchase PayPal; Musk, the company’s top stakeholder at the time with 11.72% of the shares, received $175.8 million. Musk acquired the X.com domain name from PayPal in 2017; over 15 years after he first registered it. Musk had planned to make “X, the everything app” by the year 2022.

Musk joined the non-profit Mars Society in early 2001, where he examined financing options for sending a plant growth chamber to the Red Planet. In 2020, SpaceX successfully launched the Demo-2, its first crewed voyage, making it the first private corporation to successfully launch astronauts into orbit and connect a crewed spacecraft with the ISS.

Since its inception in 2015, SpaceX has been working on the Starlink constellation of low-Earth-orbit satellites to provide satellite Internet connectivity. In February 2018, the company launched the first two prototype satellites. Musk said in October 2022 that SpaceX has spent $80 million donating 20,000 satellite terminals to Ukraine along with free data transmission subscriptions. Musk publicly announced that SpaceX would continue to deliver Starlink to Ukraine for free, at a yearly cost to itself of $400 million, despite having previously asked the United States Department of Defense to pay for additional units and future subscriptions on behalf of Ukraine.

In 2003, Martin Eberhard and Marc Tarpenning funded the startup that would become Tesla, Inc. under the name Tesla Motors. Before Musk joined the company, both men were instrumental in its infancy. It was reported in The Wall Street Journal in February 2022 that the SEC was looking into whether or not Elon and Kimbal Musk engaged in insider trading in connection with the sale. Musk introduced the Tesla-made robot Optimus in the year 2022.

The Securities and Exchange Commission filed suit against Musk in 2018 after he tweeted that he had the money to take Tesla private. The complaint claimed that Musk’s tweet was fraudulent, misleading, and detrimental to investors, and it sought to prevent him from holding the position of chief executive officer (CEO) at any public company. A lawsuit that alleged Musk’s tweet about the price of Tesla stock (“too expensive imo”) breached the agreement was halted by a judge in 2020. After Musk tweeted about “Tesla’s solar roof production volumes and its stock price,” the SEC found that he had twice violated the agreement, according to papers obtained under the Freedom of Information Act.

Musk’s cousins Lyndon and Peter Rive started SolarCity in 2006, and Musk contributed the company’s initial concept and funding.

In 2016, Tesla paid over $2 billion to acquire SolarCity, and the company has since combined that business with its battery division to form Tesla Energy. The stock price of Tesla fell by more than 10% after the acquisition was announced. SolarCity has cash flow problems at the time. Several Tesla shareholders sued Musk and the board of directors, saying that the company’s decision to acquire SolarCity was motivated purely by Musk’s personal gain rather than by the interests of the company or its investors. In January of 2020, Tesla’s board of directors reached a settlement in the lawsuit, removing all defendants except Musk. The judge sided with Musk two years later.

Musk invested $100 million to help launch the neurotechnology startup Neuralink in 2016. Neuralink’s goal is to develop implantable brain-computer interfaces so that humans and robots may work together seamlessly.

In 2017, Musk established the Boring Company to build tunnels, and he has since unveiled ideas for high-occupancy vehicles (HOVs) that can move underground at speeds of up to 240 kilometres per hour (150 miles per hour) and avoid the congested streets of large cities above ground.

After questioning Twitter’s dedication to free expression in the past, Musk has since 2017 voiced interest in purchasing the company. Beginning in January 2022, Musk began amassing a 9.2% interest in Twitter, making him the company’s largest stakeholder by April. The announcement caused the biggest one-day increase in Twitter stock price since the firm went public in 2013. As part of a deal reached on April 4, Musk agreed to join Twitter’s board of directors and be restricted from owning more than 14.9% of the company. Nonetheless, on April 13, Musk announced a buyout proposal to purchase 100% of Twitter’s stock at $54.20 per share, for a total offer price of $43 billion. The board of Twitter consequently implemented a “poison pill” shareholder rights plan to make it more expensive for any individual investor to possess more than 15% of the firm without board approval. Musk, however, had completed his bid for almost $44 billion by the end of the month. About $12.5 billion was borrowed against his Tesla shares, and another $21 billion was invested by him personally.

Awards

In 2018, Musk became a member of the prestigious Royal Society (FRS). A Yale University honorary degree in engineering and technology and IEEE Honorary Membership were awarded to him in 2015. In 2008, he won the George Low Transportation Award from the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics, and in 2010 and 2012, he won the Gold Space Medal from the Fédération Aéronautique Internationale and the Gold Medal from the Royal Aeronautical Society, respectively, for his work on the Falcon rockets. On four separate occasions (2010, 2013, 2018, and 2021), he was named one of Time’s 100 Most Influential People lists. In 2021, Musk will be honoured as Time magazine’s “Person of the Year.” Time’s editor-in-chief Edward Felsenthal stated, “Person of the Year is a marker of influence, and few individuals have had more influence than Musk on life on Earth, and maybe life off Earth too.” Musk was accepted into the National Academy of Engineering that same year, 2022.
